A search engine that specializes in blogs and other media, Technorati is a mammoth directory of posts and other fresh content. The site measures blogs with its Technorati Authority ranking system, which simply counts the number of individual blogs that have linked to a site in the past six months. Links from claimed blogs are weighted by their own Technorati Authority number, which means that links from the most popular blogs will have the greatest impact on the measurement.
Strategies for Building Technorati Authority
Like other search engine rankings like PageRank, Technorati Authority evaluates inbound links. Specializing in blogs as it does, Technorati.com focuses on the number of linking sites, rather than the number of links. This counteracts the possibility of gaming the system by creating a massive number of blog posts that link to a site in order to increase its Technorati Authority. A blog can only increase its Authority by increasing the number of other blogs that link to it.
The following strategies will work better, and be easier to track, if all involved blogs have been claimed by their owners on Technorati.com.
Create a Blog Network
Using a small number of blogs owned by one or more people with related interests, create a blog network. Using a spreadsheet, list each blog in the network along both the vertical and horizontal axes. The vertical axis tracks the outbound links, and the horizontal lists the inbound from within the network. Each time a member blog links to another, enter the date of the link in the appropriate box. Links are only relevant for six months, so each field should contain the date of the most recent link only. A network of five blogs can boost thus boost the Authority of each of its members to at least 5.
Link to Relevant Posts
After deciding on a topic for a blog post, use Technorati's search function to find recent posts that may expand upon the post's keywords or related ideas. Link to one or more of those posts using relevant keywords. This will not directly boost the Authority of the linking blog, but many blogs have tools that track inbound links, so the link may get the attention of the receiving blogger. Bloggers are community-oriented, so attracting them as readers means attracting an audience that links to posts they've enjoyed themselves.
Comment and Participate
Comments are often the only reward, monetary or otherwise, that bloggers receive. Positive comments are always welcome, and many bloggers encourage lively dissent and debate as well. Commenters are generally permitted to include a web address along with their thoughts, and this should not be omitted. Commenting is a vital part of the blogging community, and doing so regularly can build a loyal reader base that will also link to posts they enjoy.
Technorati Authority can't be gained without time and planning, which is why it's such a valuable number for bloggers to track. It should be noted that microblog sites such as Twitter are not tracked by Technorati, although Twitter in particular has its own search function.
